LP Classic Bulldog Project
There are many programs presuming to create the 'original' Bulldogs of yore. These dogs, with their bloody past, apparently appeal to the imagination of many. Are these true 're-creations' of the bull baiting dogs of the past? Probably not, they are a creation of our visualization of that past.
Bulldogs were dogs bred for a task, not a breed but a type; used for bull baiting and as a butcher dog. The practise of bull baiting however existed long before the word 'Bulldog' became in use.
There are different opinions and theories about when, where and how bull baiting came up as a sport. Several historical writings seem to give us contradictory information, however, the first known reference to some sort of bull baiting dates from early 13th century.
Around 1500 we come across the first mention of the word 'Bolddogge', referring to as butchers dog (Oxford English Dictionary). A letter, dated 1632, first mentioned the name 'Bulldog' and early 17th century dogs used for bull baiting became know as Bulldogs.
One of the major statements made by almost all breeders of 'Old' Bulldogs is about temperament. They want the physical appearance but without the alleged extreme temperament.
Unfortunately, although in the beginning most programs are launched as being capable working dogs, this seems to be forgotten over time, especially in Europe.
The LP Classic Bulldog Project is mainly based on English Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terrier blood. In the future, infusion of other types is not excluded.
Goal is a powerful strain of dogs, strong-minded, protective and with a certain level of hunting drive. A healthy body structure; weight preferably between 16 and 26 kg without extremes but with obvious Bulldog traits.
I register all by myself bred dogs in a database, so a guaranteed correct pedigree with for each dog a LP Classic Bulldog Project registration number (CBP).
